About Light Work
Light Work is a non-profit, artist-run photography and digital imaging
organization that has been supporting artists working in photography and
related media since 1973. Located on the campus of Syracuse University,
Light Work provides artist programs for the Community Darkrooms, a public
access photography facility that is a principal unit within the Student
Affairs Department at the university.
Light Work's mission is to provide direct support to artists working in the mediums
of photography and digital imaging. Light Work provides services to artists and
to the public through exhibitions, lectures, classes, artist residencies, publications,
on-line computer projects, and other related projects. Light Work's programs
are designed to serve artists and audiences by furthering a public discourse
about contemporary photography locally, nationally, and internationally. Light
Work's aim is to support artists in the production of new work and to provide
a forum for artists from outside Light Work's geographic area to interact formally
and informally with our local community.
Light Work gives support to 1) emerging artists producing new and important work;
and 2) established artists who are not receiving public attention, or those who
are not a part of photography's mainstream.
